A Historic Gathering Today, May 17, 2026
This morning, Sunday, May 17, 2026, Americans from across the country are preparing to gather on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving. Promoted by President Donald Trump as part of the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary, this special day of prayer and rededication calls the nation to humble itself before God and reaffirm its identity as one nation under God.
Gates opened at 9:00 AM ET, with the full program running from approximately 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Whether attending in person,
, or praying from home, today marks a significant national moment.

The 1776 Call to Prayer and Fasting
Exactly 250 years ago today, on May 17, 1776, the Continental Congress called for “a day of humiliation, fasting, and prayer.” In the tense days leading to independence, they declared:
“In times of impending calamity and distress; when the liberties of America are imminently endangered by the secret machinations and open assaults of an insidious and vindictive administration, it becomes the indispensable duty of these hitherto free and happy colonies, with true penitence of heart, and the most reverent devotion, publicly to acknowledge the over ruling providence of God.”
General George Washington ordered the Continental Army to observe the day with solemn devotion, seeking God’s blessing on the cause of liberty.
A Biblical Foundation: 2 Chronicles 7:14
This gathering stands firmly on the timeless promise of Scripture:
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
President Trump has publicly highlighted this verse in the days leading to today’s event.
The Two Conventions – Thrones, Tabernacles, and Altars
In his recent Substack post “The Two Conventions: The Importance of Thrones, Tabernacles, and Altars,” Professor David K. Clements frames today’s gathering as a profound spiritual convention — a Tabernacle moment of open worship, repentance, and intimacy with God. Taking place in the shadow of the Washington Monument (which he describes as carrying deep symbolic and historical layers), this event represents pure worship confronting surrounding spiritual realities.
Clements contrasts this spiritual gathering with the upcoming political “natural” convention, emphasizing the divine order: Tabernacle (worship and intimacy) precedes Throne (authority and governance). He draws from the Tabernacle of David — a place of continuous, veil-less praise — as a model for restoring authentic worship in our time.
Looking Ahead
As America approaches its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026, today’s Rededicate 250 event invites citizens of every background to reflect on the source of our liberties and recommit to the principles that birthed this nation.
Whether you are heading to the Mall this morning, watching from afar, or pausing in personal prayer, may this day echo the spirit of 1776 and the heart of 2 Chronicles 7:14.
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 33:12)
God bless you, and God bless America.
